A Scalable Platform Powering 39 Educational Websites

The Challenge

The client needed to manage complex, relational data for thousands of schools, degrees, and locations across dozens of career verticals. Think about the data model: a single school might offer 15 different programs across 3 campuses, each with its own accreditation status, tuition rates, and admission requirements. Now multiply that by thousands of schools and 39 career niches.

They needed a scalable, repeatable platform that could be deployed across multiple domains without rebuilding from scratch each time. Every new niche site (culinary schools, HVAC training, dental assistant programs, etc.) needed to pull from the same central data but present it with site-specific branding and content. And every site needed to generate thousands of SEO-optimized pages that could rank for competitive educational keywords.

Building each site as a standalone project would've taken years and been impossible to maintain. The client needed a platform, not a collection of websites.

Our Solution

I engineered a unified, multi-site platform with three core components. This was a true custom application development project, not a website build.

Custom Platform Development

The backend runs on PostgreSQL with a headless CMS for centralized content and data management. All 39 sites share the same database and content infrastructure. When a school updates its tuition or a new program gets accredited, you update it once and it propagates across every site that references that school.

I designed the data model to handle the relationships between schools, programs, locations, and career verticals. A single query can pull every accredited nursing program within 50 miles of a zip code, or find every school that offers both HVAC and electrical training. That kind of relational flexibility is what makes the platform actually useful, not just a static directory.

SEO-Focused Front-End

The front-end uses Next.js to generate thousands of fast, SEO-optimized landing pages via server-side rendering (SSR) and incremental static regeneration (ISR). Every page loads fast and is fully indexable by search engines, which matters when you're trying to rank tens of thousands of pages.

Each site automatically generates location-specific pages (e.g., "culinary schools in Portland, OR"), program-specific pages, and school profile pages, all from the central database. The URL structures, internal linking, heading hierarchies, and schema markup are all baked into the templates. The same web design principles we apply to any site build are here, just automated across thousands of pages instead of dozens.

Modular Design System

A flexible, consistent design system lets us spin up a new niche site in a fraction of the time it would take to build from scratch. Each site gets its own branding, color scheme, and niche-specific content, but they all share the same component library and layout patterns.

This means when we improve a component (like the school comparison tool or the program search filter), every site in the network benefits immediately. It also keeps the design quality consistent across the entire portfolio instead of having some sites look polished while others look neglected.

The Results

The platform has been running for years, and it continues to be the core revenue driver for the business.

Successfully powers a network of 39 authoritative educational websites from a single shared platform.

Rankings for thousands of competitive national and local educational keywords, including top positions for high-value terms like "best [career] schools near me."

High-intent organic traffic driving lead generation as the core business asset. These aren't casual browsers; they're people actively looking for training programs.

New niche sites can be launched quickly by plugging into the existing platform, without starting from scratch each time.

This project is one of the best examples in our portfolio of what happens when software engineering and SEO strategy work together from day one. The platform wasn't built and then optimized for search after the fact. Search performance was a core design requirement from the start, and that's why it works as well as it does.
