Semantic Search Engine for Degree Programs

The semantic search engine for degree programs

SEOWeb DevelopmentProgrammatic ContentInformation Architecture

You ask in plain words. Hakia matches you to programs by meaning, not keywords, then ranks them on real cost, salary, and graduation data. It starts with tech degrees and bootcamps. It does not stop there.

What Is Hakia

Hakia is not a new name. Back in 2004 it was one of the original semantic search engines, built on a single idea: search should match what you mean, not the words you happen to type. The web went a different way. The idea was still right. Hakia takes that same engine and points it at the biggest decision most people ever make, which is what to study and who to become.

Type "hands-on tech that pays well without huge debt" into a normal search box and you get a wall of links that happen to contain those words. Hakia reads the intent behind the sentence and hands back actual programs that fit, ranked on tuition, salary, and graduation rate. Right now it covers technology, from computer science and artificial intelligence to cybersecurity and data science, with program data for all 50 states.

It covers the bootcamp side too. Software engineering, data science, and cybersecurity bootcamps sit right next to the degrees, so someone weighing a four-year program against a 12-week one can see both honestly. Technology is the starting point, not the ceiling. The plan is to bring every degree type under the same engine. The goal never changes: help you figure out what you want to do with your life, then help you actually get there.

What We Built

Search that matches meaning, not words

Most "best degree" sites are a keyword index with ads bolted on top. Hakia is built the other way around. Every accredited tech program in the country gets turned into a mathematical fingerprint of its meaning using Voyage AI embeddings, the same class of retrieval models that run inside production AI systems. Your question gets fingerprinted the same way, so the engine compares intent to intent instead of words to words.

Type "cybersecurity that pays well" and you get real programs that fit, ranked by outcome, even when not one of them uses those exact words. That is the difference between matching letters and understanding a question, and it is the original Hakia idea from 2004 finally pointed at something worth searching for.

Rankings nobody paid for

The rest of the category gets one thing badly wrong. Most "best of" lists sell the top spots, or rank on reputation, which usually just means whoever has the oldest brand. Hakia ranks on tuition, ROI, salary, and graduation rate, all pulled from federal data. No paid placement, not ever. A school cannot buy its way to the top of a list.

For a decision that costs tens of thousands of dollars, that is the only kind of ranking worth reading. The same model runs across every specialization, from software engineering and cloud computing to machine learning, and across the bootcamp side too.

Built to get found, and getting found

A search engine only matters if people land on it. Hakia runs on Astro, pre-rendered to static HTML so every one of its 5,700+ program pages loads almost instantly. No client-side rendering, no JavaScript bundles slowing things down, near-perfect PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals across thousands of pages.

Every page carries structured data, a clean heading hierarchy, and internal linking that tells Google exactly how degrees, careers, bootcamps, and locations connect. Crawl budget, canonical tags, and sitemap management all matter more at this scale than they do on a 10-page business site, and they get the same attention here that a local client's SEO would.

That foundation is doing its job. The site is already ranking for tech degree and bootcamp searches, the two categories it covers today, and the same structure is ready for every degree type that comes next.
