Michael has 27 years of SEO experience. Taylor has 11 years of SEO experience, starting as a content writer under Michael (his dad), then content management, then running WordPress sites at scale. He also holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Oregon State and a B.A. in Psychology from UW Seattle. A few California rules worth knowing

The advertising rules that actually apply to you

California has more category-specific advertising rules than most states. Some apply to every business in the category regardless of size. Others have thresholds you'll probably never hit. Below is the honest version of which rules actually apply, with sources you can verify yourself.

Contractors

Display your CSLB license on every ad

If you do work over $500 in California, the Contractors State License Board requires your active license number on every advertising surface. Website, Google Business Profile, paid ads, business cards, the side of the truck. Most contractor sites we audit are missing it somewhere. We make sure yours isn't.

Bar Rules 7.1 through 7.5

California's attorney advertising rules are strict. Words like "best" or "top-rated," past results, and client testimonials all trigger disclosure requirements. We write attorney headlines and PI ad copy with the rules in mind from the first draft so it doesn't need a rewrite the day after the bar sends a letter.

Healthcare

CMIA on top of HIPAA

The Confidentiality of Medical Information Act adds California-specific rules on top of federal HIPAA, especially around marketing pixels and third-party analytics on pages that mention health conditions. The CA Medical Board also restricts before-and-after imagery and outcome claims.

BAR registration on your website

Licensed auto repair shops in California have to display their Bureau of Automotive Repair registration on their site and in advertising. We add it alongside the LocalBusiness schema so it's visible and indexed correctly.

CCPA / CPRA

Probably doesn't apply to you

CCPA only kicks in if your business hits one of three thresholds: $25M or more in annual revenue, the personal info of 100,000+ California consumers a year passing through your hands, or 50% or more of your revenue coming from selling personal data. Most small businesses are well below all three. If you're approaching any of them, we'll handle it with your privacy attorney. Otherwise you can safely ignore the agencies trying to use it as a fear pitch.
