A family-owned California SEO agency and web design company for California small businesses.
Michael has 27 years of SEO experience. Taylor has 11 years of SEO experience, starting as a content writer under Michael (his dad), then content management, then running WordPress sites at scale. He also holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Oregon State and a B.A. in Psychology from UW Seattle. Both of us are senior SEO strategists on every California account, and Taylor also leads development on every site we ship.
The practical version of that is when you hire us, you get a dedicated marketing team and a dedicated development team in one engagement. A real software engineer in your back pocket. Need a custom feature on the site, a tracking integration that doesn't exist out of the box, an automation between two tools, a refactor of a slow page? It happens in-house instead of waiting on a separate dev shop. The California client list is mostly contractors, healthcare practices, attorneys, dog walkers, and a handful of small agencies and ecommerce brands.
Most of our California clients came to us after another agency stopped getting them rankings. The story is usually the same. Junior people doing the actual work. An account manager sitting between you and whoever supposedly built the strategy. Rankings that climb in month two and flatten by month four. California is competitive enough that average work doesn't get you very far.
The upside of operating in California is pricing power. A new customer in San Mateo or Pasadena or Carlsbad is worth a lot more than a new customer in most of the country, and once your SEO is producing leads, that math compounds quickly. Getting there is the actual job, and we've been doing this job for 27 years.
Both founders on every account
Michael (27 years SEO) and Taylor (11 years SEO) handle strategy, Google Business Profile work, on-page SEO, link building, and the monthly reporting themselves. The people you talk to on the call are the people doing the work. No account manager layer between you and the strategy.
Hand-coded in Astro
Every site we build is hand-coded in Astro. Not a WordPress site held together by 30 plugins and an annual security incident. Sub-second load times, PageSpeed scores 95 or better, schema markup wired in correctly. Your website is half of your SEO and most California agencies quietly skip that half.
Spanish-language pages when the data supports it
About 28% of California households speak Spanish at home, per the U.S. Census American Community Survey. In a lot of California zip codes that's a second ranking surface worth chasing. We're not a fluently bilingual team, but we set up Spanish-language pages, hreflang tags, and Spanish GBP descriptions when the keyword data says it's worth doing.

California is seven different markets, not one.
You can't run one SEO strategy across the whole state. Search behavior in San Francisco doesn't look anything like search behavior in Bakersfield. Agency competition in San Diego is a different fight than in Visalia. Here is how we approach each region we work in.
Greater Los Angeles
Anchor cities
Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena, Burbank, Glendale, Inglewood, Torrance
The largest media market in the state with the deepest density of service businesses anywhere in California. Map Pack rankings here move through neighborhoods, not citywide pages, because LA is too big for any one location page to carry. English-plus-Spanish search is a real ranking surface across the LA basin and the East San Gabriel Valley.
San Francisco Bay Area
Anchor cities
San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Santa Clara, Berkeley, Daly City, San Mateo
The most expensive paid search market in the state and one of the most demanding organic markets in the country. Buyers here actually read your content. They click deeper, they research harder, and they convert at higher lead values. The higher CPCs and the heavier content load earn back faster because the lifetime value is bigger too.
San Diego County
Anchor cities
San Diego, Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Oceanside, El Cajon, Escondido
Coastal premium plus inland working-class residential, biotech corridor in the north county, military and tourism citywide. Local search behavior splits cleanly along the I-15 corridor, and a single citywide page rarely ranks well across both halves of the county.
Inland Empire
Anchor cities
Riverside, San Bernardino, Ontario, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Murrieta, Temecula
Logistics-driven economy with the fastest-growing residential corridor in California. Agency competition is way thinner than coastal Southern California, which makes the Inland Empire one of the easiest places in the state to rank a small business. Costs are lower and ranking timelines are faster than in LA or San Diego.
Central Valley
Anchor cities
Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton, Modesto, Visalia, Merced
Agriculture anchors the economy and most national agencies ignore the Central Valley entirely. Bilingual search is a real ranking surface in most cities here. The Map Pack in most service categories is winnable in four to six months instead of nine to twelve. The businesses are real, the budgets exist, and the serious local SEO competition mostly does not.
Sacramento and Northern California
Anchor cities
Sacramento, Roseville, Folsom, Elk Grove, Vacaville, Fairfield, Davis
State government anchors the economy and tech is creeping in from the Bay. Roseville and Folsom are some of the fastest-rising residential markets in the state. Less competitive than the Bay, more competitive than the Central Valley, and it rewards service businesses willing to invest in actual content instead of stock copy.
Central Coast and North Coast
Anchor cities
Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, Salinas, Santa Rosa, Napa, Eureka
Smaller, slower markets with strong tourism overlays in wine country and along the coast. Local search here rewards businesses that invest in genuine local relevance. Citywide pages backed by actual neighborhood content beat any templated SEO play.
The advertising rules that actually apply to you
California has more category-specific advertising rules than most states. Some apply to every business in the category regardless of size. Others have thresholds you'll probably never hit. Below is the honest version of which rules actually apply, with sources you can verify yourself.
Display your CSLB license on every ad
If you do work over $500 in California, the Contractors State License Board requires your active license number on every advertising surface. Website, Google Business Profile, paid ads, business cards, the side of the truck. Most contractor sites we audit are missing it somewhere. We make sure yours isn't.

California's attorney advertising rules are strict. Words like "best" or "top-rated," past results, and client testimonials all trigger disclosure requirements. We write attorney headlines and PI ad copy with the rules in mind from the first draft so it doesn't need a rewrite the day after the bar sends a letter.

The Confidentiality of Medical Information Act adds California-specific rules on top of federal HIPAA, especially around marketing pixels and third-party analytics on pages that mention health conditions. The CA Medical Board also restricts before-and-after imagery and outcome claims.

Licensed auto repair shops in California have to display their Bureau of Automotive Repair registration on their site and in advertising. We add it alongside the LocalBusiness schema so it's visible and indexed correctly.

CCPA only kicks in if your business hits one of three thresholds: $25M or more in annual revenue, the personal info of 100,000+ California consumers a year passing through your hands, or 50% or more of your revenue coming from selling personal data. Most small businesses are well below all three. If you're approaching any of them, we'll handle it with your privacy attorney. Otherwise you can safely ignore the agencies trying to use it as a fear pitch.

What Our Work Looks Like in Each Industry
A few examples of the kind of work we'd run for a California engagement, organized by industry. The strategy is different in each, but the standard isn't.
Built for Contractors Who Want the Phone to Ring
For a California home services business, the math is simple. Rank in the Map Pack for the services you actually do in the cities you actually serve, keep the CSLB license visible on every advertising surface, and the calls come in. The two case studies on this card are home services businesses we built for in the Pacific Northwest. Same methodology we'd run for a California contractor.
Newman Electric came to us with no website at all. We built a 60-page custom site, ran 29 service area pages across the metro, and got their Google Business Profile past 90 five-star reviews inside the first year. AvilaCo Drywall walked in with a dated site and an empty Map Pack. We rebuilt the site, fixed the GBP, and put the license number where the regulators expect to see it. Both clients have a steady call volume now that wasn't there before.
Built for Firms That Need to Rank Across Multiple Cities
Personal injury and litigation are some of the most expensive search categories in Google. CPCs for "car accident lawyer" or "personal injury attorney" routinely run $50 to $200+ depending on market. That makes organic visibility extremely valuable, and it makes the multi-city problem worth solving correctly. A single firm site usually can't dominate every city in a service area on its own.
Guldjian Law is a personal injury firm we worked with from October 2015 to June 2019. We rebuilt the main firm site, stood up a network of city-specific lead-gen sites across the firm's service area, and ran Google Ads alongside the organic program. The main site went from 14 keywords to a peak of 1,057, with $134K+ in cumulative organic traffic value across the engagement.
Sniff and Go: A California Build We Are Proud to Show
Sniff and Go is a San Francisco dog walking company we designed and built for. We rebuilt their site from scratch on the same hand-coded technical foundation we put under every site we ship: mobile-first, sub-second load, schema wired in, and 20 dedicated neighborhood pages targeting the SF neighborhoods they actually walk in (Castro, Noe Valley, Marina, Pacific Heights, Mission, Cow Hollow, and more).
This is the bar we set for every California small business website. Distinctive on the surface, fast underneath, designed to convert, and sitting on a technical foundation Google actually wants to rank. A WordPress site weighed down by 47 plugins isn't going to get you there.

Why California is worth investing in real SEO.
California is the largest small-business market in the United States. The U.S. Small Business Administration's 2024 California Small Business Profile reports about 4.2 million small businesses in the state, which is 99.8% of California employers and roughly 47.7% of the private workforce.
The state's economy ranks fourth in the world. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis's state GDP release puts California's GDP above $4 trillion, larger than every country except the U.S., China, Germany, and Japan.
Roughly 28% of California households speak Spanish at home, per the U.S. Census American Community Survey, with much higher concentrations across Greater LA, the Inland Empire, the Central Valley, and parts of San Diego County. That makes Spanish-language search a real ranking surface, not a footnote.
The point: California small businesses charge more, average transaction values are higher, and lifetime customer values are bigger. A new lead in San Mateo, Pasadena, or Carlsbad is worth materially more than the same lead in most of the country. That is the upside that justifies actually investing in your search presence instead of cutting corners with template work.
